Udupi Cafe: South Indian Vegetarian

It's not enough anymore to say you're having "Indian" for dinner, just as you can't just eat "American" food or "Mexican." You've got to know whether the cuisine you're trying is from the south, a particular state, or by the ocean. If you went to Maine, you wouldn't expect hush puppies and if you go to Udupi Cafe, you shouldn't expect all of the dishes you find in most Indian restaurants.

Udupi, in Rancho Cordova, has a sign listing it as "Healthy Indian Vegetarian." I had never heard of the word udupi, so I looked it up and found that it is the name of a town in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. The cuisine there is vegetarian and traditionally also uses no onions or garlic. Coconut, jackfruit, mango chutney, and grain-based dishes are common, while the filled crepes called masala dosa originated there. Six of us ordered willy-nilly off the extensive menu and soon began getting a dizzying array of dishes to try. We had to try dosa, of course, and got the Masala Dosai ($7.50), filled with potatoes and onions and the Chetti Nadu Califlower Dosai ($7.50) with onion, cauliflower, tomato, and chetti nadu spice. (I guess they don't subscribe to the no onions and garlic rule.) They were impressivly big, thin wheat crepes, folded and filled, with three condiment dishes perched on top. Those included a smooth ground coconut chutney, a sambar (a split pea and vegetable stew), and a spicy chile-based chutney. Both dosai were tasty, but the creamy potato-filled version was fantastic. We also saw another table get a Paper Dosai, which is a very thin, crispy, rolled version of the crepe that was so long it took four plates to hold it all!

The rest of our dinner included:

  • a collection of fried appetizers including a Samosa, Medhu Vada (friend lentil doughnut), Vegetable Pakora (battered vegetables that were puffier than I've had before), and a Masala Vada (crispy lentil doughnut). They came with lots of condiments as well. These were the least interesting part of the meal, with a similar texture to everything.
  • Channa Batura ($9.50): a hugely puffy bread that came with Channa Masala (a chickpea and tomato stew), onions, and cilantro. The channa was delicious and the batura very impressive.
  • Chilly Gobi ($9.50): batter-fried cauliflower with a spicy chili sauce. As someone who doesn't much like cauliflower, I thought this was really interesting. The crunchy vegetables and spicy sauce were a nice combination.
  • Vegetable Biryani ($7.99): saffron rice cooked with veg and herbs (see photo above). This was a huge serving, and a nice neutral dish, but not the best example of their cooking.
  • Onion Paratha and Peas Paratha ($3.75 each): layered whole wheat bread stuffed with vegetables. These were soft and I preferred the pea version, with its vibrant green filling.
  • Baigan Bartha ($9.50): roasted mashed eggplant with onions and tomatoes. This is one of my favorite Indian dishes and this version was very good. Thin slivers of fresh ginger graced the top. Smeared on some paratha, this was heavenly.
  • an okra-chile mixture that wasn't on the take-out menu that I brought home, but was a delicious use of okra. I find that Indian preparations of this vegetable keep it from being too slimy, which is the usual turn-off for many people. This one was a good example of non-slimy okra.

    I'm sure there's more that I forgot, since we had tons of leftovers. Including tip, each of us only spent $21 and were well sated. Oh--there were Mango and Salty Lassis too: iced yogurt drinks. The salty one had some nice spices and was a good foil for some of the rich food. So it was a very satisfying experience despite an almost total lack of ambiance in the place. The restaurant is in a strip mall just off Sunrise Boulevard, with unadorned windows. But the food more than made up for the stark interior. It's worth trying for some seldom-offered examples of this southern Indian cuisine.

    Ann and I together went to lunch here last week. Yum. The lunch buffet was really good. The flavors were outstanding and the masala dosas that they bring out to your table were enormous and tasty to boot. A new favorite restaurant. :) Thanks y'all!
